The famous Raheny Shamrock’s Lord Mayor of Raheny Summer Series kicks off this Tuesday, 11th June, for its 20th year. This is an AAI-sanctioned series of weekly, timed 2-mile road races, taking place every Tuesday evening between 11th June and 3rd September. It culminates in a Handicap Road Race on 10th September, with individual start times based on competitors’ times throughout the series, which always ensures a thrilling finish! Competitors’ best eight races count for overall awards in the Lord Mayor Series, but in addition to those prizes, previous years have included an automatic entry to a raffle, which takes place in the clubhouse after each race over refreshments.
The entry fee is €7.00 per race – €50 for the Lord Mayor Series – or €2.00 for Juniors and unemployed. You can register in the Raheny Shamrock’s Clubhouse before 7.45pm. The clubhouse is located in Raheny Village, on the Howth Road, behind the scout den.
All races start at 8pm, at the north-east corner of Wades Avenue. The course is two laps, broadly following a triangular route. From the start, runners follow Wades Avenue towards Killester, taking a left onto the slight downhill of All Saints Road, running alongside St. Anne’s Park, and taking another left back onto Wades Avenue for a slight uphill back up to the start/finish line and the start of lap two. Be aware that roads are not closed and there will be light traffic.
The series is very much a community event, attracting all levels of competitor, and many locals will be out to cheer on participants. Highly recommended.
